At 76, Aretha Franklin has passed away from advanced pancreatic cancer. She was active from 1956 to 2017. FIVE decades. Let that sink in.
If that isn’t a love and passion for the music, I don’t know what is. She was only in her 20’s when she became the Queen of Soul in the 60’s. She was the foundational inspiration for much of what we know of R&B, jazz, and even opera. She taught us about self-RESPECT, undying love, and the pain and happiness associated with all those emotions.
One of my favorite recordings is “Share Your Love With Me” which she recorded for her 1970 album, This Girl’s in Love with You. There’s just so much soul, emotional texture, and effortless show of vocal prowess in this track. The backup singers, bass, and piano supported her flawless and incandescent voice. A wonderfully delicate yet passionate recording.
She will be missed.
